Old bull young bull

Updated: Jan 30

That's the expression we used in our family whenever I'd get into a disagreement with my dad. I guess it means that there's only room for one bull in the paddock and eventually the young bull wants to exert his rights, even if he's not quite there yet.

It's only now that I'm an old bull with a 19 year old young bullock son that I can see it from the other side.

The old bull still wants to maintain dominance over his turf, but gradually loses the ability to do it, often without noticing.

Sometimes I look at the 2 3/4 year old who is so cute and innocent and well, quite sweary, and think 'it won't be long until he turns into that great big lump of a boy like Finn' the 19 year old. And then in a flash, he'll be a decrepit, introspective, fatso like me who wonders how many years he's got left to stay upright.

And it gets you thinking, 'what's it all for?' To make more pot-bellied loudmouths who piss on the floor, fart under the duvet, and try to avoid doing the washing up? Why am I adding this to the world?

Then the 2 3/4 year old looks up at me with his shiny blue eyes and cheeky smile and says 'Fuck you Daddy'. And I laugh and realise what it's all about.

Seems to be what it's all about is you being a terrible father swearing in front of your toddler. Don't you realise the long term effects this will have on him? He'll turn into an Australian.
